Never buy body scrub again

Middle age brings many challenges for women, one of them being skin issues.  In a previous post, I discussed the problems I was having with my complexion and the remedy I found for it.  While my face is doing great, thanks PCA, I have been dealing with dry skin everywhere else.

Estrogen stimulates our bodies formation of collagen and oils.  So a decrease in estrogen equals a decrease in skin-smoothing collagen and oils.  This basically means dry itchy skin.  Body scrubs slough off the top layer of dead skin and are vital to any good skin care regime.

I have always been a lover of body scrubs.  There is something so rewarding about applying the gritty substance to your skin and working it in.  A few years ago when I learned what the actual abrasive material was in my store-bought scrubs, and the potential environmental impact of that ingredient, I was motivated to make my own scrubs.

My favorite scrub is so simple and involves two ingredients….coconut oil and granulated sugar.  I use Vita Coco coconut oil.  Vita Coco coconut oil is 100% organic, cold-pressed, unrefined, virgin coconut oil.   It is actually great for everything from beauty to cooking.

My recipe is simple:

1/2 cup coconut oil – make sure it is in its solid state

1/4 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar depending upon how coarse you want your scrub

Optional – you can add some essential oil such as lavender or citrus if you would like a scented scrub (I don’t do this as I love the scrub in its pure form)

Combine the ingredients and store in a cool dry place.  It does not have to be refrigerated.  I leave a small jar in the shower for regular use.  I store my coconut scrub in 4 ounce Ball Mason Jelly Jars that I purchase from Amazon.

This scrub can be used on your entire body, including your face, provided you do not add any scent.  Cautiously use it in the shower though as coconut oil is slippery and you run the risk of falling.

Hopefully I have persuaded you to make your own scrub.  They also make great gifts!
